The Charles J. Ellison Memorial Scholarship

The Charles J. Ellison Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior of Croton-Harmon High School who shows passion and dedication toward Croton Emergency Medical Services.

A 2014 CHHS graduate, Charles passed away in 2017 at the age of 20, after an 8-month battle with brain cancer. Charles was passionate about volunteering for CEMS, becoming certified as an EMT in 2014 and receiving the Executive Officers Award in 2016. Charles enjoyed providing a vital service to the community, while also building on his strong sense of compassion towards others. His zest for life had a large impact on those who knew him and volunteered with him.

The recipient of this award will have shown a similar commitment to CEMS, and a desire to continue volunteering in EMS for years to come.

Applicant Qualifications and Expectations
  1. A Senior at CHHS who is in good academic standing.
  2. Will be attending college after graduating high school.
  3. A Youth Corps or adult member of CEMS, who has met all active membership requirements and shown a dedication to the organization.
  4. Active youth Corps members are expected to volunteer at least 10 hours per month (on average) for the 6 months prior to the deadline for submitting this Application.
  5. Submits either a soft copy or hard copy of a completed Application to CEMS by March 1st.

Scholarship Description and Conditions

A $1,000 award will be paid near the time of graduation from CHHS. The recipient may receive an
additional $1,000 per year for up to three additional years paid directly to their higher education
institution by the Ellison Family. Receipt of any additional funding will be contingent on:

  1. The recipient’s showing continued passion and dedication toward CEMS.
  2. The recipient’s meeting ongoing volunteer requirements for CEMS active Youth Corps or adult
membership. (Active Youth Corps members are expected to volunteer at least 10 hours per
month (on average) while not on School Leave. If recipient no longer lives in the Croton vicinity,
participation in another EMS agency will be considered.)
  3. The recipient’s remaining enrolled as a student at a higher education institution.
  4. Availability of funds in the Scholarship Fund.

Determination of whether the additional funding contingencies have been met will be at the
discretion of the CEMS officers and the Ellison Family.
